Mipam Chokyi Wangchug, the 6th Shamar Rinpoche (1584-1630): the red hat Karmapa of the Karma Kamtsangpa Tradition of the Kagyu School.

Adorned with the red vajra crown and wearing the robes of a monk he holds a book in the right hand and performs the mudra (gesture) of explication with the left.

He was a close disciple of the 9th Karmapa Wangchug Dorje (1555-1603) from whom he received his name. Born in Drigung, Central Tibet, he was very well educated and traveled extensively. Invited to China to teach the Emperor, he also journeyed to the south and taught the King of Nepal. On returning to Tibet, he enthroned the 10th Karmapa, Choying Dorje.
